Health: Take A Memory Recall Test

In order to see clearly how your memory rhythms function during a standard learning period, it will be useful for you to experience a brief recall during a learning period yourself. To do this, follow these instructions carefully.

Recall during a learning period

  1. Read the following list of words, one word at a time, once only, without any memory systems or techniques and without going back over any words.
  2. The purpose of your reading the list will be to see how many of the words you can remember without using any memory principles
  3. Simply try to remember as many of the words in order as you can.
  4. Start reading down the columns of words now.

  1. Now check the way in which your own memory worked.
    1. How many words from the beginning of the list of did you remember?
    2. How many words from the end of the list did you remember?
    3. Did you recall any words that appeared more than once?
    4. Was there any word in the list of stood out in your memory as very different?
  2. In this rest almost everyone recalls the information similarly.
    1. One to seven words from the beginning if the list.
    2. One to two words from end of the list.
    3. Most of the words that appear more than once (in case ‘the’, ‘and’ and ‘of’)
    4. the outstanding word or phrase (in this case, Leonardo da Vinci)
    5. relatively new, if any words from middle of the list.
  3. Why should these similarities occur? This pattern of results shows that memory and understanding do not work in the same way, although all the words were understood, not all of them were remembered.
  4. Our ability to recall information we understand is related to several factors.
    1. We tend to remember first things and last things more easily than things in between. Therefore, we recall more information from beginning and end of a learning period.
    2. We learn more things are associated or linked in same way, by using rhyme, repetition or something that connects with our senses. In the case of the word recall test, you have just done, repetitive words include ‘the‘, and ‘of‘, while the associated words include ‘Leonardo Da Vinci’ and ‘drawing‘.
    3. We also learn more when things are outstanding or unique. In the word, recall test, the outstanding item is Leonardo Da VInci.
